One of the things I absolutely love about our classes is that they’re a great opportunity for dads to spend some quality time with their little ones. Particularly during the weekend, but increasingly during the week as well, it’s really fabulous to see so many daddies bringing their little (and not so little) ones swimming and enjoying the brilliant bonding experience that our classes provide. In our weekend classes nearly 45% of our swimmers come with their dads every week, and a further 15% of swimmers alternate between two parents.
We all know how lovely it is to be able to meet parents of similar aged children; I really valued all the 'mum friends' I made at toddler groups and classes when my daughters were babies. My husband, however, didn’t know many other men with children of a similar age so had nobody apart from me to discuss the joys, milestones and challenges of parenting with.
Often when babies start classes very young it’s daddy that brings them; post-birth it can take some time for mum to be physically ready to swim, whereas babies are ready as soon as their cord has dropped off. Watching a new dad's confidence grow as he learns to teach his baby to swim is a real privilege. As the children grow older, encouragement and support from dad is a powerful tool to help them to develop into confident little swimmers.
With Father’s Day coming up (on June 17th), what better gift for that special daddy could there be than swimming lessons? 30 minutes each week of quality, focussed one-on-one bonding time with their child, having a brilliant time whilst learning vital personal survival skills too!
